Quick facts

A Roman fort turned Norman castle turned Victorian Gothic fantasy, Cardiff Castle stands in the middle of the city centre with rooms remodelled by William Burges.

Bute Park, about 130 acres of parkland and arboretum beside the castle, runs along the River Taff.

National Museum Cardiff is free to enter and holds Impressionist paintings by Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh and Cézanne, and St Fagans open-air museum is free too.
