Quick facts

A first Roman fort was probably built here around AD 55.

A Norman motte-and-bailey castle was later built on the Roman site, with a stone shell keep added in the 12th century.

In the 19th century William Burges remodelled it for the 3rd Marquess of Bute in Gothic Revival style, beginning with the Clock Tower in 1868.
