Quick facts

The Norman keep of Rochester Castle, begun around 1127 and about 113 feet tall, still towers over the Medway beside the cathedral.

Neighbouring Chatham's Historic Dockyard is a Royal Navy yard where you can go aboard a Second World War destroyer and a Cold War submarine, and watch rope being made in a Victorian ropery.

Dickens's Rochester comes alive each year, with morris dancers filling the High Street at the Sweeps Festival over May Bank Holiday weekend and a Dickensian Christmas festival in December.
