Quick facts

The house was built in 1591 for Sir Peter Buck, Clerk of the Cheque at Chatham Dockyard.

Dickens used it twice: as Westgate House in The Pickwick Papers and as the Nuns' House in The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

The Swiss chalet where Dickens wrote was moved to its garden from Gad's Hill in the 1960s.
