Quick facts

The present pier was begun in 1895 and officially opened in 1897 to serve George Burt's steamer services.

Steamer services ended in 1966 and the pier then decayed for almost 30 years before it reopened in 1998.

An earlier pier on the site, built in 1859 and 1860, was put up mainly to ship stone.
