Quick facts

Tradition says the meadow has not been ploughed for about 4,000 years, and it holds Bronze Age round barrows and Iron Age remains.

The Freemen of Oxford's right to graze animals there free of charge is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, and horses and cattle still graze it.

It floods in winter and sometimes freezes for skating, and swimmers bathe in the Thames where it meets the Castle Mill Stream.
