Augustus Pitt Rivers gave the university his private collection of about 22,000 items in 1884, and it has since grown to more than 600,000.
Objects are arranged by how they were used rather than by age or origin, and the original display cases were returned to the front of the museum in 2008–2009.
The Haida totem pole, 11.36 metres tall, is the largest object on display and has stood here since 1901.
