Quick facts

The Iron Age hillfort, possibly begun around 400 BC, became the Roman settlement of Sorviodunum and later a Norman castle and cathedral site.

The cathedral moved to the new city of Salisbury in the 1220s, and by 1540 no inhabited houses remained.

It kept electing two Members of Parliament with almost no residents until the 1832 Reform Act.
