William of Normandy ordered the castle built soon after landing in 1066, first in wood and from 1070 in stone.
Storms in February 1287 collapsed the soft sandstone cliffs and took parts of the castle into the sea.
It is a Grade I listed ruin on West Hill and opens to visitors in season, from March to October.
