Quick facts

Europe's largest beach-launched fishing fleet still works from the shingle of the Old Town, beside tall, narrow black net shops that are 39 listed buildings.

The pier burned in 2010, was rebuilt as an open timber deck over the sea, and won the 2017 Stirling Prize for architecture.

Two cliff railways lift you from the Old Town to the castle ruins on West Hill and to the clifftop country park on East Hill.
