On 17 March 1999 the 850-ton building was moved 17 metres back from the cliff edge on hydraulic jacks because erosion threatened it.
The light was switched off in 1902 when the new Beachy Head Lighthouse at the foot of the cliffs took over.
It appeared in the James Bond film The Living Daylights in 1987.
