Quick facts

One of the largest expanses of shingle in Europe, a flat, treeless landscape of fishermen's huts, boats and lighthouses unlike anywhere else in Britain.

Film-maker Derek Jarman's black timber Prospect Cottage and its famous shingle garden stand among the huts, and the house can be visited by timed ticket.

A big RSPB nature reserve with four trails and several hides lies just inland, and a miniature steam railway runs here from Hythe.
