Quick facts

The present Gothic minster was begun around 1220 and consecrated in 1472.

The Great East Window, about 23 metres tall and 10 metres wide, has over 300 panels and is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the country.

Excavations beneath the south transept found the Roman fortress headquarters, and the area reopened to the public in 2013.
