Bishop William Giffard built a stone hall here around 1110, and Bishop Henry of Blois built most of the surviving ruins after 1129.
The palace was used until the 1680s, and its west wing is still the bishop's residence.
The ruins sit beside the cathedral close and are managed by English Heritage.
