Quick facts

The bay was renamed Viking Bay after a replica Viking longboat rowed from Denmark arrived there in 1949 to mark the legendary landing of Hengist and Horsa.

It is a horseshoe-shaped bay with children's rides, a surf school, beach huts and a harbour jetty.

Dickens is reported to have swum here, and the bay is the town's main beach, backed by cafés and ice-cream parlours.
