The architect John Norton remodelled the house from 1863 as a Gothic Revival mansion for the Gibbs family.
The Gibbs family fortune came from Antony Gibbs & Sons, which traded in Peruvian guano.
The estate's chapel, built 1872 to 1877, was modelled on the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris.
