The gallery opened in 1923, from a bequest of 22 paintings and £6,000 left by Alderman John Chisholm Towner.
The current building, designed by Rick Mather Architects and opened in 2009, was meant to echo the chalk cliffs of the Eastbourne Downs.
Entry to the gallery and its collection gallery is free, and the collection includes a large body of work by Eric Ravilious.
