A seafront tower, once a semaphore station, whose time ball dropped at 1pm so ships could set their clocks, now a small museum.

The tower was built in 1820 with a semaphore mast, and the time ball was added in 1855 so ships could check their chronometers.
The ball was run by the Royal Observatory until 1927, and after a restoration with a new mast it is programmed to drop every day at 1pm.
The tower is now a four-floor museum of ship timekeeping, owned by the district council and run largely by volunteers.
