Quick facts

The street takes its name from its butchers' stalls; it was called the Great Flesh Shambles by 1426 and had 31 butchers' shops in 1885.

The upper floors overhang the street, which is about 120 metres long, by several feet.

Meat hooks still hang outside several of the shops.
