Quick facts

Workmen found a battered lead casket hidden in the chancel wall in 1885.

In 2020 radiocarbon dating placed the bones in the mid-7th century — almost certainly St Eanswythe, granddaughter of King Ethelbert.

Eanswythe is believed to have founded a monastic community here around AD 660.
