Pugin began the church in 1846 and it is the only church he built with his own money.
Pugin is buried in a vault beneath the chantry chapel he designed, and the church became the shrine of St Augustine of England in 2012.
A visitor centre about St Augustine and Pugin opened next to the church in 2017.
