Southover Grange was built in 1572 using Caen stone from the ruined Lewes Priory.
The diarist John Evelyn stayed at the Grange as a boy while he attended Lewes Grammar School.
The gardens hold arches and carved stones from the Priory, and a mulberry tree thought to be about 350 years old.
