Quick facts

The present iron pier opened in August 1889, replacing a wooden pier of 1830.

Its electric railway, opened in 1890, was the first pier railway in the country and has run again since 1986.

The Southend Pier Museum is in the old lifeboat station at the pierhead, and the pier was named Pier of the Year in 2007 and 2023.
