Quick facts

The water shows the blue opalescence typical of chalk spring-fed ponds.

A 19th-century tale, traced to Martin Tupper's 1858 book, says King John abducted a woodcutter's daughter who drowned in the pool.

When Agatha Christie disappeared in December 1926 it was feared she had drowned here; her abandoned car had been found at nearby Newlands Corner.
