Quick facts

Merton Russell-Cotes had the house built as a birthday present for his wife Annie, and it was completed in 1901.

Annie gave the house and its contents to the town in 1907, and Merton gave his art collection.

The collection includes Rossetti's Venus Verticordia and Evelyn De Morgan's Aurora Triumphans, alongside objects from the couple's travels, especially to Japan.
