Quick facts

The stone marks the reputed place where William II, known as Rufus, died during a hunt in 1100.

Its inscription blames an arrow shot at a stag by Sir Walter Tyrrell, and says the king's body was carried to Winchester in a cart.

The stone was cased in cast iron in 1841 after repeated vandalism, and it now stands among oaks in open forest.
