Begun around AD 290, it was the biggest of the Roman Saxon Shore forts, and its walls, over 500 metres long, still stand nearly to full height.
William the Conqueror landed here in 1066 to begin his invasion of England and built a fortress inside the Roman defences.
In 1940 machine gun posts were camouflaged into its ancient walls, and a recreated commander's office is on show.
