Quick facts

The gardens hold the ruins of St Mary's Abbey, a Benedictine house dissolved in 1539.

The Multangular Tower, a ten-sided corner tower of the Roman fortress wall, still stands here.

The octagonal observatory was built in 1832-33 for the Yorkshire Philosophical Society.
