Quick facts

The Lower Gardens are a Grade II* listed public park running down the River Bourne valley through the town centre to the sea.

A bourne is a small stream, and the name Bournemouth comes from the Old English word, first recorded in 1406 as La Bournemothe for the river mouth.

The gardens end at the seafront beside the pier, so a walk through them is a natural way down to the beach.
