Quick facts

It opened to the public in 1893 and has been in its present building, once the Sydney Hotel at the gateway to Sydney Gardens, since 1916.

The collection includes 18th-century British portraits by Gainsborough, who lived in Bath, as well as Ramsay and Stubbs.

A three-storey glass extension by Eric Parry Architects opened in 2011 beside the original building.
