Launched on 29 December 1860, she was one of the first warships with both an iron hull and armour plating, built in answer to France's Gloire.
After decades as a store ship and oil jetty, she was donated by the Royal Navy in 1979 and spent eight years being restored to her 1862 condition.
She arrived in Portsmouth in 1987 and opened as a museum that July; she is part of the National Historic Fleet.
