What is left of a once mile-long Victorian pier, now a charity-run platform of beach-hut shops, food stalls, a helter-skelter and fairground rides over the water.

The third pier on this spot opened in 1899 and, at 1,154 metres, was among the longest in Britain until storms in 1978 and 1979 brought down its central section.
The Herne Bay Pier Trust, a registered charity, now runs the landward end, with retail beach huts, a helter-skelter and a carousel.
The attractions are open at weekends, on public holidays and in school holidays, so check before going on a weekday out of season.
