Quick facts

The foundation stone was laid in 1936, work stopped during the Second World War, and the cathedral was consecrated in 1961 in front of Queen Elizabeth II.

Its red brick was modelled on a medieval brick from Albi Cathedral, and more than 200,000 people paid to have a name inscribed on a brick.

A gilded angel stands on the 49-metre tower, and the cathedral was a filming location for the 1976 film The Omen.
