Quick facts

Building began in 1089 and the church was largely complete by 1100.

The cloisters hold the earliest surviving fan vaults in England and appear as Hogwarts in the first, second and sixth Harry Potter films.

The Great East Window of the 1350s is about 22 metres high and 12 metres wide, and was reputed to be the largest in the world when installed; Edward II is buried here, in a shrine.
