Quick facts

Begun as the Horn Pier in 1844, it reached its present length between 1897 and 1904, in concrete faced with granite.

More than 8.6 million people passed through in 1914–18, most of them soldiers bound for the Western Front.

Its derelict harbour station was restored as a promenade from 2015 and won a National Railway Heritage Award in 2023.
