Quick facts

Henry II's Great Tower is fitted out with lavish interiors to show what royal life in a medieval palace was like.

Beside the Saxon church stands a Roman lighthouse built in the early 2nd century, said to be one of only three Roman-era lighthouses still standing in the world.

Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay directed the Dunkirk evacuation, Operation Dynamo, from his headquarters in the tunnels cut into the cliff beneath the castle.
