The present pier was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh on 19 November 1957 and is 1,026 feet long.
It is Grade II listed and the last fully intact leisure pier in Kent.
It replaced a pier built in 1864 that was badly damaged in January 1940 when a mined Dutch ship, the Nora, struck it.
