A steep shingle beach below a promenade, facing the Channel with no harbour wall and the odd fishing boat pulled up on the stones.

Until the late 1970s fishing boats worked from the steep shingle beach in front of the promenade.
On a clear day the coast of France, about 40 km away, can be seen from the seafront.
In the age of sail, boats launched from this beach supplied the ships waiting in the Downs, and a large lugger needed 20 to 30 men at the capstan to haul it back up.
