Quick facts

The tower began as a corn windmill in 1766, and by 1842 the artist William West had turned it into an observatory.

Its camera obscura projects a live panorama of the gorge and Clifton Suspension Bridge onto a concave table.

A 200-foot tunnel built by West leads to St Vincent's Cave, which opens onto the cliff face.
