Quick facts

It began as St Augustine's Abbey, founded in 1140, and became a cathedral in 1542.

The 14th-century eastern end is a hall church, with aisles as high as the choir, which is rare in Britain.

The late Norman chapter house is described as the finest still standing, and the two west towers were completed in 1888.
