Quick facts
The present pier is Eugenius Birch's design, opened on 11 August 1880.
Extensions in 1894 and 1909 took its overall length past 1,000 feet (about 305 metres).
Royal Engineers partly demolished it in July 1940 as a precaution against invasion, and it reopened in August 1946.
