Historic England calls it the best-preserved Roman gateway in the country, and the largest, about 107 feet wide.
The surviving arched footway and part of a guard tower stand at the start of a walk along Colchester's Roman town wall.
Most of the gateway was later built over, and an 18th-century pub stands on the rest.
