Quick facts

Roger de Montgomery began the castle around 1067, and its Norman keep is open to climb.

The castle has been the seat of the Earls of Arundel and the Dukes of Norfolk, and passed to the Howard family when Lady Mary Fitzalan married the 4th Duke of Norfolk in 1555.

The rooms hold furniture, tapestries and paintings by artists including Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Canaletto.
