Quick facts

The city takes its name from the springs beside the cathedral, which still feed the moat around the Bishop's Palace.

The cathedral's scissor arches were added in the 14th century to stop the central tower from sinking.

Vicars' Close, built in the 14th century for the cathedral's choir, is often described as the oldest purely residential street in Europe with its original buildings intact.
