Quick facts

The Salomons Memorial viewpoint looks out over Dorking and the Weald towards the South Downs, and is the most popular spot on the hill.

Steep slopes of yew and box woodland run down to the River Mole, where a path of stepping stones crosses the water; the chalk grassland has many orchid species and 38 kinds of butterfly.

Jane Austen set the disastrous picnic in Emma on Box Hill, and the 2012 Olympic road race climbed it, so walkers and cyclists still come for both.
