Quick facts

Catherine Parr, the sixth wife of Henry VIII, died here in 1548 and is buried in St Mary's Church in the castle grounds.

The castle has ten gardens covering about 15 acres, including the Queens' Garden and a Knot Garden of more than 1,200 box hedges.

Parliament ordered the castle slighted after the Civil War, and it lay in ruins for nearly two centuries until the Dent family restored it from 1837.
