Quick facts

The Baron's Hall, finished in 1341, still has its original 60-foot chestnut-beamed roof, one of the grandest medieval rooms in England.

Formal walled gardens of about four hectares are divided into hedged rooms, including a Victorian Italian Garden around a lily pond and tall yew hedges.

The Sidney family has lived at Penshurst Place since 1552, and the state rooms, from the Long Gallery to Sir Philip Sidney's funeral helm, are shown as a real family home.
