Quick facts

The garden sits on a sandstone ridge of about 600 feet, one of the highest points in Kent, and looks out over the Weald towards the North Downs.

It was laid out in 1893–1895 with the help of the garden writer William Robinson, with a shrub garden added between 1900 and 1908.

Its arboretum of exotic shrubs, rose garden and rock garden have been looked after by the National Trust since 1964.
