Quick facts

A ring of beech trees crowns the top of the South Downs, a landmark you can pick out from miles around and just off the South Downs Way.

From the hilltop the view runs north across the Sussex Weald, with the Downs ridge and the coast around Shoreham and Worthing glimpsed to the south.

Local legend says that if you run seven times anticlockwise around the trees the Devil will appear and offer you a bowl of soup in return for your soul.
